FORT WAYNE – Warsaw’s Jarred Brooks captured the title that eluded him last year.
The senior won the 113-pound state wrestling crown by defeating Yorktown’s Schuyler Phillips in an 18-6 major decision Saturday night in Indianapolis. He had nine takedowns in the title match, allowing Phillips to get up six times.
Brooks entered this year’s tournament ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 1 in the country by the website The Open Mat. He finished the season 35-0.
Brooks reached the finals by pinning Fairfield’s Forrest Glogouski in 4:54 in the quarterfinals and scoring a 7-1 decision in the semifinals over Perry Meridian’s Brandon James.
Brooks lost last year’s state title match to Pendleton Heights’ Mason Todd.
“He’s worked very hard for this,” Warsaw coach Justin Smith said in a telephone interview. “Losing last year only motivated him to work that much harder. He really came here on a mission, and he’s accomplished that mission.”
South Adams’ Todd Batt took second in the 132-pound weight class. Batt fell 9-2 to Perry Meridian’s Jared McKinley.
Batt reached the championship match by scoring an 8-2 decision over Ben Davis’ Le Moss in the quarterfinals and a 3-2 win over Alexandria’s Luke Blanton in the semifinals.
Other area wrestlers who placed in the state finals were: Garrett’s Hayden Lee (third, 106), East Noble’s Lucas Riecke (eighth, 138), Bellmont’s Brooks Faurote (fourth, 145), Bluffton’s Phillip Gerber (eighth, 145), North Side’s Anthony Linnear (third, 170), Bellmont’s Brad Busse (seventh, 182) and Bellmont’s Ben Baker (fourth, 195).
