Purdue trails Western Michigan 8-7 at the end of the first quarter at the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.
Purdue reached Western Michigan's territory in its first two possessions. The first ended with a punt. The second ended with a fumble by quarterback Caleb TerBush. The Broncos recovered at Purdue's 49. Alex Carder completed a 49-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Jordan White on the next play. The Broncos added a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 9:14 left in the first quarter.
Purdue attempted a 45-yard field goal in its next possession. But Carson Wigg's kick sailed wide right.
The Boilermakers finally cashed in on its fourth drive. Antavian Edison made a tremendous 22-yard catch at Western Michigan's 6. Three plays later, Robert Marve completed a 1-yard pass to Reggie Pegram. The extra point got the Boilermakers within 8-7 with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
